About the breed
Temperament & care
Alaskan Malamutes are powerful, dignified sled dogs with a wolf-like appearance and an affectionate temperament towards their pack. They are pack-oriented, loyal to their family, and surprisingly playful, but their independence and high prey drive mean they need experienced, confident owners. Malamutes are not suited to hot climates without air conditioning and ample shade.
Grooming needs
Malamutes have a thick plush double coat that sheds heavily twice a year — during these periods daily brushing is non-negotiable to manage the volume of loose fur. Outside of coat-blow season, brushing two to three times a week and occasional baths keep the coat healthy and odour-free.
